Description

Hypertension during pregnancy can place extra stress on the heart and Kidneys. This can lead to heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. Chapter 13 of the CVD Masterclass covers 4 topics i.e. Hypertension in Pregnancy, Stroke, Heart Failure and Renal Disease.

  • This chapter gives information on Hypertension Disorders in Pregnancy (HDP)- Prevalence of HDP in Sub Saharan Africa, classification (pre-existing, gestational, pre-eclampsia, antenatally unclassifiable hypertension and pre-existing plus superimposed gestational hypertension), guidelines for measuring BP in pregnancy, complications and clinical outcomes of HDP, long-term risk of diverse CVD, preventive measures and antihypertensive medications. 
  • Hypertension in stroke, the epidemiology of stroke and high blood pressure in Africa, stroke mortality rates in adults, risk factors for stroke, symptoms, complications, diagnostic tools, preventive measures, and 2021 AHA/ ASA guidelines to manage hypertension and PASCAR's treatment calculation.
  • Prolonged hypertension leading to heart failure (HF), including information on HF prevalence in Africa, classification, HF mechanism, investigations (basic and advanced) and recommendations to manage HF with Reduced Ejection Fraction (REF) and Preserved Ejection Fraction (PEF). 
  • Hypertension in renal disease, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Africa, Arterial hypertension in CKD, pathophysiology of hypertension leading to CKD, symptoms of kidney damage and the KDIGO 2021 clinical guidelines.
