Description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides comprehensive guidelines for the oral administration of artemether-lumefantrine (AL), a key antimalarial treatment. MSF's guidelines recommend AL for treating uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria, other Plasmodium species when chloroquine is unsuitable, and as a follow-up to parenteral therapy for severe malaria. The regimen involves two doses daily for three days, with specific dosing based on patient weight. AL should be administered with meals or a fat-containing drink to enhance absorption. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Caution is advised when co-administering with drugs that prolong the QT interval. In cases of vomiting within 30 minutes post-dose, the full dose should be re-administered; if vomiting occurs between 30 minutes and 1 hour, half the dose should be given again. The tablets should be kept in their blister packs until use and stored below 30°C
