Description
Soil-transmitted helminth infections—caused by worms such as roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms—are common among people living in poverty and can lead to anemia, intestinal issues, and poor nutrient absorption.
The WHO advises preventive chemotherapy with a single dose of albendazole (400 mg) or mebendazole (500 mg) for pregnant women after the first trimester in areas where worm infections affect 20% or more and anemia prevalence exceeds 40%.
This intervention, part of WHO’s antenatal care guidelines, helps reduce worm burden and improve maternal health, alongside long-term measures like better sanitation and hygiene.
